Overview
A competitive, decent, midsize car
The Chrysler Sebring is a line of mid-size cars sold by the Chrysler Corporation. First introduced in 1995, the Sebring became an immediate hit. The Sebring sedan and convertible are successors to the Chrysler Cirrus; the Sebring coupe exited the model lineup after 2005.

Over the years, the marque has identified itself as sleek, powerful and luxurious. This image however had begun to fade owing to monotony of design over the previous years. However, Chrysler is hoping for a comeback with the more powerful and re-designed 2007 model.

Base, Touring, and Limited are the trims offered on this sedan. Top competitors include Toyota Camry, Pontiac G6, Ford Fusion, Subaru Legacy, Suzuki Verona, Dodge Stratus, KIA Optima, Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, Mazda Mazda6, Volkswagen Jetta, Mitsubishi Galant, Chevrolet Malibu and Mercury Milan. The Sebring stacks up favorably in terms of fuel economy in the city providing 22 mpg.

Engine and Performance
New V6 Powertrain
The all new exterior is accompanied by a few tweaks under the hood. The older 2.4-liter inline-4 engine now packs more power and delivers better fuel economy. With an added FlexFuel capability, the 2.7-liter V6 has avoided being phased out after the introduction of a newer more powerful 3.5-liter V6.

The 3.5L engine is mated to an AutoStick® 6-speed automatic transmission. The AutoStick enables smooth, precise, and effortless gear shifts. The easy shifting enhances engine performance especially on steep climbs. The two other engines, however, have continued with their 4-speed automatic mates.

Walk-around
All-new exterior styling
The redesigned 2007 Sebring is larger and more powerful and it has many new features compared to last year’s model.

The exterior has received an almost complete makeover and has very little in common with its predecessor. The signature Chrysler grille remains the same but is smaller in size and placed a little higher. The quad headlights are well spread over the bumper. The roofline curves towards the rear with a short overhang resulting in reduced headroom in the rear. Bold strokes inspired by Chrysler’s Crossfire model are spread out on the hood.

16-inch steel wheels come standard on the Base version and the higher versions stand on 17-inch and 18-inch alloys. The car has retained its previous length but is taller to its predecessor by about 5 inches.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Slightly snug but comfortable cabin
The interior has been remodeled to look simpler and less glossy. The dash is now dual-tone and appears less cluttered. The instrument cluster is new with green backlit gauges. Only the ‘Limited’ option comes with a tortoise shell-style instrument panel bezel.

The standard upholstery is soft cloth but seats with YES Essentials® odor and stain-resistant fabric or two-tone leather are available. The front seats with lumbar support are manually adjustable and a power driver's seat is optional.

Air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering, heated power mirrors, and a rear window defroster are standard. A few notable options are UConnect® Hands-Free Communication, MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment Radio with a 20GB hard drive, and a Rear Seat Video System.

Driving Impressions
Quiet ride, good handling and an impressive new transmission
The new 6-speed automatic transmission, available only on the Limited trim, handles the powerful 235-horsepower 3.5 V6 well and responds well to irregular throttle bursts. The same cannot be said about the lesser engines and the 4-speed automatic on the Base and Touring. These engines could do with a little more power for improved performance.

Weighing around 3500 lbs., the car is able to corner well with limited body roll. The model as a whole has a stiffer chassis and a softened suspension. The ride is mostly quiet and the handling is good.

Safety
5-star impact rating
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded this car 5 stars for frontal impact and side impact and 4 stars for rollover resistance. Sebring safety is on par with that of its rivals.

All Sebring models come with standard advanced multistage front airbags, supplemental side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Electronic stability control and traction control are available at an extra cost.
