Convertible all the way
The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible is a two-door convertible from DaimlerChrysler Corporation. It is available in a front-wheel drive (FWD) version and can seat up to four passengers. It is available in three models: Base, Touring, and GT.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible debuted in 2005 and received a makeover for 2006 and 2007. The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible has been upgraded with a soft-touch electric lift-gate and remote keyless entry on the Base model; YES Essentials seat fabric and console flood light on Limited, which is optional on Touring, and three new exterior colors.

All the models are available with a powertrain and basic warranty for 36 months or 36,000 miles.

With all these features and more, the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible competes with the Audi A3, Chevrolet HHR, Ford Mustang, MINI Cooper, and Mazda MAZDA3.

Engine and Performance
Roaring and performing
All trims of the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible are equipped with a 2.4-liter In-line four-cylinder engine. However, in different models, this engine produces different power and torque.

The Base is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve SMPI engine that produces 150 hp @ 5,100 rpm and 165 lb-ft. of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

The Touring derives power from a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve Turbo engine that delivers 180 hp @ 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft. @ 2800 rpm to 4000 rpm.

The GT is equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve High Output Turbo engine that generates 230 hp @ 4800 rpm and 245 lb-ft. @ 2800 rpm to 4800 rpm.

The Base model and Touring are mated to a standard 4-speed automatic transmission (AT) with overdrive. The GT comes standard with a 5-speed Heavy Duty manual transmission (MT) but is also available with the option of a 4-speed AT with overdrive.

The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible, with its retro-inspired design and looks, reminds of you of the mid-20th century American sedans. But at the same time, it also exhibits some modern styling cues.

Its frontal fascia is marked by a horizontal grille, which features a prominent Chrysler insignia and slightly scalloped halogen quad headlamps. The hood features the Chrysler Wing badge. All trims feature standard variable intermittent windshield wipers.

The Convertible’s profile is adorned by body-colored body-side molding and bright door handles.

Its rear is no less impressive; it features an impressive tail-light cluster and a color-keyed rear bumper. All trims also feature an aerodynamic sport bar with kick-up reinforcement that provides stiffness to the rear. The lift-gate bears the “PT Cruiser” badge as well as the Chrysler wing badge. A rear spoiler is optional on all the trims.

The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible comes standard with power Black cloth top which can be removed at any time. The option of a Pebble Beige cloth top is available on the Touring and the GT trims.

The PT Cruiser Convertible measures 168.9 inches in length and stands on a wheelbase of 103.0 inches. With a decent ground clearance of 5.8 inches, it can be driven on all kinds of roads without posing much problem.

The Base model comes standard with P195/65R15 tires and 15-inch Black wheels while the Touring rolls on standard P205/55R16 tires and 16-inch aluminum wheels. It is also available with the option of 16-inch chrome-clad wheels. The GT comes standard with 205/50R17 tires and aluminum chrome-clad wheels.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Comfort and functionality
Crafted with the most refined comforts, the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible blends style, utility, fun, and functionality.

All trims of the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible come with roomy, comfortable interiors and can seat up to four passengers. The Base model comes standard with cloth low-back bucket seats with YES Essentials, available as optional on Touring, which comes standard with cloth low-back bucket seats. The Touring is also available with the option of leather-trimmed bucket seats. The GT offers superior comfort with its standard sport leather-trimmed bucket seats.

The Base model and Touring feature manually-adjustable seats. All trims come standard with manual driver lumbar adjust. However, the GT offers more comfort to the driver with its 6-way adjustable power driver's seat, available as optional on the Base model and Touring.

Rear seat 50/50 Fold-and-Tumble is standard on the Base model, Touring, as well as GT. It can be folded to transform the interiors from passenger seating to cargo space.

With a power convertible top, which can be removed at the flick of a button, you can enjoy the breeze or the sun on your drives as and when you want. A floor console with covered storage and sliding armrest, standard on all the trims, offers convenient stowage of all your long or short drive requirements.

All trims feature an effective air-conditioning system, power windows, power-adjustable exterior mirror, power door locks, interval wipers, and a rear window defogger. Center-console in all the trims includes cup-holders, coin-holder, multi-purpose bin, and cassette and CD storage.

All trims of the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible feature a standard tilt steering and tilt steering column, which can be adjusted according to the driver’s seating position for more comfort. The GT comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel for better grip, available as optional on the Touring. The Touring and GT also benefit from a standard trip computer.

Some convenience features present in all the trims are 12-volt power outlets, front and rear climate-control outlets, speed-sensitive power locks, solar-control glass and power mirrors. Vehicle Information Center, fog lamps and security alarm are some features limited to the Touring and GT. Cruise control comes standard on the Touring and GT, but is optional on the Base model.

A load-bearing exterior rack and tow hitch receiver, which make towing or carrying cargo easier, are optional on all the trims. The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible, when properly equipped, can tow cargo weighing up to 1,000 pounds. The Convertible’s cargo storage capacity behind the second-row seat is 7.40 cubic-feet while its fuel tank capacity is 15.0 gallons.

For entertainment, all trims come standard with an AM/FM stereo with CD-player, changer controls, six speakers, and an auxiliary jack input. All trims are also available with an optional AM/FM stereo with CD-player, six-disc CD-player with MP3 capability and six speakers. Boston Acoustics audio system, comprising six premium speakers, subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier, is also available on the Touring and GT. A navigational aid is also offered as optional on all the trims.

Driving Impressions
Silky smooth ride
The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible is a FWD vehicle. Its 2.4-liter In-line four cylinder engine generates sufficient power and torque to take on all kinds of terrains undaunted.

Maneuvered by a power rack-and-pinion steering wheel, the 2007 Chrysler PT Convertible rides on twist beam rear suspension and independent McPherson strut front suspension. McPherson strut in the front provides responsive steering and straight tracking, with a high roll center that reduces leaning of the body during turning of the vehicle. A Watt's linkage axle keeps the suspension motion aligned and reduces jerks on turns. These suspensions absorb all kinds of road irregularities and offer a jerk-free ride.

Drum brakes in the rear and disc brakes in the front offer sharp and smooth stopping power to the PT Cruiser Convertible. Performance anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes and traction control are standard on the GT. Together these help the front (driving) wheels maintain traction during acceleration and in slippery conditions.

Apart from a wide turning diameter of 37.9 feet, the PT Cruiser Convertible is easy to steer and offers good drivability in all kinds of road-conditions.

Safety
Safety stars all around
The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible has been awarded a four-star rating for frontal crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For front side crash test also, it has got a four-star rating but for the rear side crash test, it boasts of a perfect five-star.

The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible benefits from an overall rigid body structure and longitudinal steel door beams, which are capable of protecting it from side impacts.

All the trims come standard with advanced multi-stage front airbags for the driver and passenger. The GT comes standard with front side airbag, supplemental side airbags, and supplemental front seat side airbags. However, front side airbag and supplemental side airbags are optional on the Base model and Touring. A LATCH-ready child seat anchor system is also present in all the trims for safety of children.

An anti-theft system and engine immobilizer that prevents the engine from running without a properly encoded key are standard on all trims. A standard remote keyless entry with panic alarm and Sentry Key theft-deterrent system and an optional electronic parking aid are also present in all trims.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) comes standard on the GT but is optional on the base model and Touring. The GT also comes standard with traction control, available as optional on Touring.
