Overview
All-encompassing compact SUV
The Jeep Compass brings traditional Jeep styling and capabilities to another car platform. The 2007 Jeep Compass is a compact SUV that combines the versatility of a sport-utility vehicle with the fuel economy and handling of a compact car. Jeep's first small car-based SUV shares its platform with the Dodge Caliber and the new Jeep Patriot. The Compass is designed more for on-road comfort rather than off-road capability. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional.

For 2007, the Jeep Compass is equipped with a 2.4L engine that gives 172-hp. This teams up with a 5-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission based on Continuously Variable Transaxle II (CVT2). The Compass is Jeep’s first front-wheel-drive-based product with a fully independent suspension for comfortable on-road riding and handling and fun-to-drive characteristics. Close rivals in the segment include the Scion XA, Volkswagen Golf, Suzuki Aerio SX, Kia Rio5, and the Subaru Impreza Wagon.

The Jeep Compass is available in Sport and Limited versions with D and E Packages in four or two wheel-drive modes.

Engine and Performance
Impressive power from VVT
The Jeep Compass features a standard 2.4L 4-Cyl DOHC 16V Dual VVT Engine that makes 172 horsepower and optimizes torque at 165 ft-lbs. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard. The optional automatic transmission comes is CVT2, which is a second-generation CVT calibrated for engine response and precise gear ratio control. It is also expected to improve fuel economy by 6 to 8 percent.

The available 4x4 system has a “Lock” mode recommended for driving through snow, sand, and rain. EPA mileage estimates are 26/30 mpg (City/Highway) on the manual and 24/27 mpg on the automatic.

Walk-around
Traditional Jeep styling, spirited new design
The 2007 Jeep Compass wears a signature seven-slot grille, round headlights, and trapezoidal wheel openings. The windshield is steeply raked and the side profile shows the uniquely sculpted fender shapes with standard 17-inch or optional 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Exterior features include 18” alloy wheels, all season tires, spare tire, variable intermittent wipers, privacy glass, roof rack, rear defogger, rear window wiper, and a rear-lit gate door with window.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Functional and versatile cabin
The Compass has functional interiors that give buyers the flexibility to seat passengers and store massive amounts of cargo. The cabin displays a lot of hard plastic with average fit and finish. The vehicle rides high; the seating position gives driver and occupants a commanding view of the road. The rear seat has 39.3 inches of legroom. With the rear seats folded, cargo space expands to 52.5 cubic feet. This space increases to 60.7 cubic feet with the rear seats and the front passenger seatback folded flat. The standard upholstery is a stain-repellent fabric however, leather is an option.

Standard interior features include silver interior bezels, cloth upholstery, height adjustable driver seat with manual adjustable lumbar support, multi-level heating, split-folding rear seatback, manual door locks, windows, and mirrors, cruise control, power steering, tilt-steering wheel with audio controls, front and rear cup holders, 12V and 115V power outlets, and front storage console with accessory power.

Driving Impressions
Deft handling, comfortable ride
The Compass 2.4L four-cylinder delivers adequate acceleration and agile handling. The five-speed manual transmission shifts seamlessly. The optional next generation CVT takes a few moments to reach its optimum powerband. The SUV handles confidently at high speed, displaying minimal body lean or roll therefore giving you complete control over its movement.

The manual adjustments inside the vehicle require some effort. Interior materials are not quite as good as others are in the segment.

Safety
Five-Star rating in side impact crash testing
The Compass received a five-star rating during its side-impact crash testing. Some standard safety features include rear door child safety locks, integrated headrests, and front multistage air bags. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Brake Traction Control, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation and ABS with rough-road detection are other active safety enhancements.
