Overview
A saga from 2006
The Commander is a full-size sports utility vehicle (SUV). It was first launched in 2006 in the full-size SUV segment. The 2007 Jeep Commander offers more capability over rugged terrain compared to its predecessor mainly due to the benefits of its high ground clearance and excellent traction. It is the first jeep in its kind with seven-passenger seating. The various trims are offered in rear-wheel-drive (RWD), 4-wheel-drive (4WD), or 2-wheel-drive (2WD).

For the year 2007 Jeep Commander changes its base model name to Commander Sport and adds the Overland to its lineup. The renewal includes a power lift gate, body-colored door handles, and a diamond plate pattern console shifter bezel on Commander Sport. The trims available for the Commander are Sport, Rocky Mountain Edition, Limited, and Overland.

All trims come with the powertrain warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles and an outer body rust warranty of 60 months or 100,000 miles.

Engine and Performance
A choice of three
The Commander offers three types of engines: a 3.7-liter V6, a 4.7-liter V8, and a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI.

The 5.7-liter V8 HEMI consists of a Multi-Displacement System (MDS) that helps shift the V8 engine seamlessly and efficiently from eight-cylinders to four-cylinders at cruising speeds, thereby providing excellent mileage without compromising on power. This 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine generates the massive power of 330 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque.

The newly introduced 4.7-liter SOHC V8 engine comes with flex-fuel capability that improves the fuel economy of the car to a great extent. It can either use regular gasoline or a mixed compound of ethanol and gasoline called E85. The engine is equipped with an advanced calibration system that deliberates the ethanol concentration in the fuel and impeccably shifts from one fuel to the other to provide maximum efficiency in performance. This 4.7-liter V8 engine produces 235 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque.

The 3.7-liter V6 is a standard durable engine that churns out great power and is an excellent choice if you are concerned with fuel economy. It consists of a new electronically controlled throttle system that keeps the cars acceleration steady and constant when the Cruise Control feature is operating. This 3.7-liter V6 churns out 210 hp along with 235 lb-ft of torque.

The 3.7L V6 is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and both the V8 engines are coupled with a Multi-speed automatic transmission. These two types of transmission are not only smooth-shifting and efficient, but also equipped with an Electronic Range Select that allows complete automated shifting and manual gear selection.

Walk-around
Jeep-like build and styling
The Commander upholds the typical Jeep-like styling. It is liberal in its use of Jeep design cues, such as the seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel wells, and squared-off lines with flat surfaces, thereby giving it a squared muscular stance.

The Jeep Commander model shows its designer side in the various fashions in which it has designed its trims. The Sport trim has body-colored fascia that makes it look sleek, stylish, and full of energy. The Rocky Mountain, as its name suggests, is designed for awesome off-road experience and hence it is blessed with 17” aluminum wheels. The Limited shows off with a touch of chrome on its fascia and body, along with standard fog lamps. The Overland overshadows all the other trims with its elegance due to a dazzling platinum fascia and platinum bodyside moldings, in addition to body-colored side mirrors.

The Commander is available in Black, Light Graystone Pearl, Bright Silver Metallic, and for some additional costs Red Rock Crystal Pearl and Jeep Green Metallic. Your choice of color extends to Steel Blue Metallic, which is not available for the Rocky Mountain trim, as well as Mineral Gray Metallic and Stone White which are not available for the Rocky Mountain and the Overland trims.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Room for seven
The interior of the Jeep Commander offers a massive amount of space. The bucket seats are well shaped and padded. The second row has a 40/20/40-split foldable ratio and the third row has a 50/50-split allowing you to have ample cargo space. Entrance and exit to any of the rows is made easy by these foldable seat ratios. The Commander provides comfortable seating for seven. The stepped up rear seats give the back passengers a view to the road. The year 2007 Interior alterations include color-coordinated cup holders and a diamond-plate pattern on the shifter bezel.

Standard features in the Commander include a power lift gate, power adjustable pedals, Electronic vehicle information center, Air Conditioner, AM/FM Stereo with CD player, 6 Speakers, and Cloth Low-Back bucket seats.

The Rear seat ves® video entertainment system, a navigation system, SIRIUS® Satellite Digital Radio, a six-channel Boston Acoustics® premium sound system, dual-zone climate control system, UConnect® hands-free system, and a power sunroof are a few optional features that the Commander offers on it various trims.

Driving Impressions
For an aerodynamic drive
On road and off the Commander has a notably smooth and comfortable cruiser. The power and rack and pinion steering is comfortable. For the up-and-down motions on the off-road the Commander's independent front suspension and rear, five-link configuration are competent.

Compared to its competitors, the Commander is more aerodynamic without a noisy drive. The advanced Quadra Drive II system and a Jeep® Trail rated® badge certifies the Commander with an excellent go anywhere capability.

Safety
A command over safety
The Jeep series have a special command over the safety and security. Commander has earned the U.S. government’s highest rating of five-stars for side-impact crash testing. Considering the needs of a safe off-road as well as on-road drive, the Commander comes equipped with an Electronic Stability program for all its trims.

The standard safety features that the Commander provides are traction control, adjustable upper belt for the front driver and passenger, tire pressure monitor, 4-wheel Antilock-Brake System (ABS), integrated safety belt, Park sense® rear park assist system, side head curtain airbags, remote keyless entry, side guard door beams, and advanced multistage air bags.
